After months of preparation, WaterCAN is proud to announce the launch of its fourth annual Citizen Science Water Testing Week, taking place from 15–19 September 2025.
The official launch will be held on 18 September at the Johannesburg Zoo in partnership with Joburg City Parks and Zoo a date that also coincides with World Water Monitoring Day.
Over the past four years, WaterCAN has partnered with schools, communities, and volunteers across South Africa, facilitating more than 5,000 water tests. These efforts have created the country’s largest database of citizen science water testing – a critical tool for exposing pollution, identifying risks, and building a movement of active water guardians.
Dr. Ferrial Adam, Executive Manager of WaterCAN, said: “Citizen science is not just about collecting data – it is about creating a culture of involvement. Every test adds a piece to the puzzle of South Africa’s water crisis, but more importantly, it builds a movement of people who care enough to act.”
This year’s Water Testing Week places special emphasis on teaching young people about water health, equipping them with the knowledge and tools to defend their right to safe, clean water. Learners will be trained to use test kits, upload results, and understand how water quality impacts their health and future.
“When we put science in the hands of learners, activists, and ordinary citizens, we give them power. They become watchdogs, whistleblowers, and leaders in their communities. This is how we will build a water-secure South Africa – from the ground up,” Adam added.
By uniting youth, activists, and communities under the banner of Water Testing Week, WaterCAN continues to strengthen South Africa’s Citizen Science Network. The initiative serves as a reminder that water health is not the responsibility of the government alone – it requires collective vigilance and public participation.
“Water Testing Week is about action, accountability, and awareness,” Adam said. “It is about reminding South Africans that we all have a role to play in protecting our rivers, dams, and taps – always.”
