Countdown until World Water Monitoring Day, 18 September 2024

Target Reached

Thank you everyone. As of the afternoon of 11 September 2024 we reached our capacity in the number of testing kits we can distribute free of charge.

We have a team busy packing them all right now and the courier is lined up.

However, if you would like to purchase a kit, we will gladly assist. Please email info@watercan.org.za  with the subject line: “I want a purchase test kit”.

Ripple needs your help

Meet Ripple.

This droplet is the toughest Water Warrior in the world. Ripple has travelled from the highest mountain spring to the deepest parts of the ocean. And through Ripple’s adventures, the feisty liquid champion has realised that the world’s water resources needs your help.

“Untreated sewage, industrial pollution and human negligence are destroying your natural resource and my home,” says Ripple.

“But if everyone took a moment to test their local stream, house tap or dam today, we could begin winning the war on water pollution,” said Ripple the Fighter.

Ripple believes in the power of community

Ripple is looking for Water Warriors ready to test H2O. Along with WaterCAN, Ripple needs an army of 2000 Water Warriors nationwide to do this campaign justice.

“We must join our Water Warriors from across the world during the week of World Water Monitoring Day on 18 September,” said Ripple the Activist.

Ripple wants to democratize science

Ripple believes this is a movement  that we can hold government accountable and democratize science.

“This initiative encourages citizen scientists to monitor water quality, fostering transparency and collaboration in addressing the country’s water challenges and ensuring access to clean and safe water for all,” said Ripple the Professor.

Testing testimonals

We have asked a number of the WaterCAN Citizen Science participants to share their thoughts on why they test. Below is a small sample..

Margaret

I enjoy getting out to the sample collection points every two weeks. It is nice to take colleagues along and talk about the water issues we face in Makhanda and look for solutions.

Bobby

Because our water is finite; without enough good quality water everything and everyone deteriorates in health; we can use the data to lobby for better systems and behaviour change

Rose

I find it incredibly satisfying to volunteer my time in the Moreleta Kloof Nature Reserve. This includes many different activities, including the water testing. I feel that I am making a difference by helping to take care of this small nature reserve in the city and I hope to get many more people involved

Ripple says – “Join the Movement manje”

“All the data collected will be used to hold our water authorities to account,” says Ripple.

“Taking control of our finite resources, taking ownership of our environment and being active community citizens are among the first steps in working towards a better South Africa,” said Ripple the Citizen Scientist.

“I promise you that WaterCAN will make sure the data reaches the right people – we just need you to play our part.”
